Did you know that Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. (1902-1985) won the 1964 GOP primary in New Hampshire as a write-in?
Without any aid (or even the blessing) of Lodge, who was serving as Kennedy's ambassador to South Vietnam, a grass-roots group of Republican activists encouraged their fellow voters to write in Lodge's name.
With 35.5% of the vote, Lodge beat declared candidates Barry Goldwater (22.3%), Nelson Rockefeller (21%) and Richard Nixon (16.8%)
Since Lodge never declared candidacy himself, though, the wave of support quickly subsided.
